Five Ways to Decorate for Less

Five Ways to Decorate for Less

Whether your decorating tastes are simple or extreme, one thing is for certain: No one wants to spend more on decorating their home than they have to. Thankfully, decorating your home doesn’t have to be insanely expensive, no matter what your decorating style is. (Well, unless you wanted diamond studded floors–that would get expensive in a hurry!) Here are five ways to decorate for less while still getting a look that you love.

1. Shop Garage Sales and Thrift Shops

If you want to fill your home with one-of-a-kind pieces you can’t find anywhere else, garage sales and thrift shops are the perfect place to find them, especially if you are crafty. With a little paint or a few nails, you can turn someone else’s old junk into truly remarkable pieces for your home.

My favorite garage sale finds so far? An old, antique blanket chest and a beautiful coat rack. I adore them both, and I got them both for dirt cheap.

2. Replicate Expensive Items for Less

Did you find the perfect piece of home decor in the latest Ikea or Pottery Barn catalogue? Instead of buying it for full price, make a knock off version for less. Sites like Knock Off Decor and Bren Did will show you how. Find an abstract painting you love? Recreate it yourself! Found a decorated picture frame that’s to-die-for? Make your own!

3. Shop Sales and Clearance Racks

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: My absolute favorite section of any store is the clearance section, and I almost always hit it first. You can find brand new items in excellent condition for a fraction of the price just by waiting a few weeks until they go on sale! I’ve found tons of great things at Target this way. Why pay more than you have to?

4. Find Basics at the Dollar Store

When it comes to basics, there really is no reason to buy them high end. Purchase items like vases, baskets, votive candles and vase filler materials at the dollar store, and save your hard earned money for bigger pieces that people will actually notice. If Dollar store vases are too plain for your tastes, just paint them! You’d be surprised at what a little spray paint can do!

5. Embrace the “Less is More” Philosophy

When it comes to decorating, less really is more. Don’t pack your home to the brim with every home decor piece you can find. Instead, pick a few bold statement pieces and leave the rest at the store. Your home will look amazing, and your bank account will be much happier as well!
