I was recently diagnosed with hypertension and anemia. Not the best combination, I know, but it’s been one of the leading causes of my fatigue and headaches. As parents, we are constantly on the go from one point of the spectrum to another in hopes we can cram in a whole lot of responsibilities and errands in a small window of time. We get so wound up in our day to day activities, that it can sometimes cause a lack of sleep that we should NEVER do. I’m trying so hard to re-balance my life after getting new medication and having this new vitamin routine. It’s been so difficult to transition back because I find myself so tired during the day, and going to the gym these days comes far and few. I am determined to get back on track and researched tips, ideas, and ways to get a better’s night sleep. Quality sleep is far different from quantity of sleep. Here are seven great tips we found thanks to Google on ways to get a better night’s sleep.
Tip #1: Stick To A Sleep Schedule
Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends, holidays and days off. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle and helps promote better sleep at night. There’s a caveat, though. If you don’t fall asleep within about 15 minutes, get up and do something relaxing. Go back to bed when you’re tired. If you agonize over falling asleep, you might find it even tougher to nod off.Tip #2: Fight After-Dinner Drowsiness
If you find yourself getting sleepy way before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating to avoid falling asleep, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep.Tip #3: Pay Attention To What You Eat and Drink
Don’t go to bed either hungry or stuffed. Your discomfort might keep you up. Also limit how much you drink before bed, to prevent disruptive middle-of-the-night trips to the toilet.Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine — which take hours to wear off — can wreak havoc with quality sleep. And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy at first, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
Tip #4: Get out in the sunlight soon after waking up in the morning
When you wake up, don’t lounge around in bed. Don’t even stay inside. Get out in the morning sun soon after getting up. The bright sunlight (or any bright light) tells your body’s natural biological clock that it’s time to wake up, and that same clock will then be set to tell your body it’s time to go to sleep about 14 to 16 hours later.Tip #5: Postpone worrying and brainstorming
If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and postpone worrying about it until the next day when you are fresh and it will be easier to resolve. Similarly, if a brainstorm or great idea is keeping you awake, make a note of it on paper and fall back to sleep knowing you’ll be much more productive and creative after a good night’s rest.Tip #6: Practice good “sleep hygiene” in your retreat area
This does not mean making sure your bedding is clean! It means following good sleep habits and making sure that the bedroom environment is conducive to sleep. Among experts’ recommendations: Use the bedroom only for sleep and make it relaxing and comfortable retreat; ensure the bedroom is a dark, cool, quiet place; and get electronic gadgets out of the sleep environment or keep them turned off, because they stimulate the brain and their light tells the body “it’s daytime,” disrupting the internal clock.Tip #7: Get comfortable
Create a room that’s ideal for sleeping. Often, this means cool, dark and quiet. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.
Your mattress and pillow can contribute to better sleep, too. Since the features of good bedding are subjective, choose what feels most comfortable to you. If you share your bed, make sure there’s enough room for two. If you have children or pets, set limits on how often they sleep with you — or insist on separate sleeping quarters.
