The Power of the Heart – What’s Your Purpose In Life?

I’ve been thinking a lot about my life’s purpose lately. I guess even at the age of thirty-three, I still haven’t figured it out. I do know one thing, and that’s my love for creative writing. But with all the noise and distractions in our busy life, I had begun to lose sight of what I was living for. I needed peace and quiet. I needed answers. For those of you curious, The Power of the Heart is a must read! Definitely opened my eyes to “life” that I never thought about before! I don’t know about you, but we could always strive to be better, live better, and lead a life of excellence. None of us are called to be mediocre. This book asks great questions I have independently asked myself regarding whether or not I was following my dreams and fulfilling my life’s purpose. It has been fascinating and chord striking for me! I’ve learned that the heart possesses an intelligence that far surpasses that of the mind, and The Power of the Heart is made to help you gain wisdom of the heart to transform your views. I learned so much from reading the book, and found my ultimate most favorite part of the book: “The Power of Gratitude”. It is such a simple concept that many of us forget to reflect upon because of the world filled with negativity and “downers”. Gratefulness is universal and I can attest to it during times when we were at our weakest and lowest without any money to our name. It was when we began to speak gratefulness that our lives turned around.

Howard Martin in “The Power of Gratitude” was who I related to the most when he spoke of how very simple the concept of gratefulness is: the more we appreciate, the more we gain. I also appreciated that they dug deeper and discussed the second level of gratitude of giving thanks even in the face of major disappointments and tragedies.

I decided to try the Three Blessing Exercise (page 65). Every night for a week I wrote down what went well, or three blessings. The three things that went well can be small or large, unimportant or important. Then next to each item answer the question “Why did this go well?” After I completed the exercise, I reflected back to my answers and how it made me feel and the results were astonishing! I felt more grateful, because I realized there were SO many blessings I had written down. Life doesn’t seem as “down on the dumps” as they seemed once I saw in plain sight how blessed I truly was. I started noticing that I was starting to backtrack again this week and decided to continue the exercises in my journal. I felt like I couldn’t get my day started on the right foot without first reflecting and writing down all our blessings. I felt at peace, joyous, and relaxed – I wasn’t so uptight about many things going on and I can honestly say I felt much happier.

I activated the power of my heart through gratefulness. The other areas and exercises were equally great and I learned how easily I get swayed into other people’s negativity and by practicing gratefulness, eliminated all that. The one question that had me thinking the most was how regarding contemplation that everything that happens is a lesson. I often ask myself now: “What did I learn from that event? What good did it bring into my life?”. Because now I’ve changed my perspective on thoughts and see that everything that happens is a lesson.
