MedImmune and World Prematurity Day #protectpreemies #rsv

Did you know that worldwide, 13 million babies are born early every year, including more than half a million in the United States? Despite these staggering numbers, many parents still aren’t aware of prematurity—the leading cause of neonatal death.

In fact, a recent survey on prematurity awareness found that 3 in 10 mothers of preemies weren’t aware of the possibility of prematurity until they had their first child. And 75% of parents don’t know the definition of prematurity– being born at or before 37 weeks gestation age. Given this low awareness, it is clear many parents don’t fully understand the increased risks that come with premature birth – and the specialized health care that preemies often require. As a mother who experienced two premature births, this awareness is alarming and my heart goes out to the parents who have struggled with the same premature birth experiences I experienced.

My Story:
My third and fourth children were both born early (the third child was 36 weeks and the fourth child was 33 weeks). I was diagnosed with preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Both pregnancies required weeks of bed rests and double the doctor’s visits just to prevent premature delivery. I did not understand the full risks of my babies because I was scared to expect the worst. Thankfully my third child was developed enough to go home with us on the second day at the hospital, but my fourth child…

Was only 4lbs when she was born and was in an incubator for over two weeks. She had to be without the loving caress of her parents and just looking at this photo breaks my heart.

Prematurity disrupts a baby’s development in the womb, often stunting the growth of some of the body’s most critical organs. These babies are at an increased risk of serious medical complications and regularly face weeks or even months in the NICU. This often contributes to mothers feeling powerless, anxious and isolated. On November 17 – World Prematurity Day – we’re hoping to educate all expecting parents about the possibility of and potential risks associated with preterm births.

Because their immune systems and lungs aren’t fully developed, preemies are more likely to develop infections and are more susceptible to respiratory problems. In fact, 79 percent of preemie moms have a baby who was hospitalized due to a severe respiratory infection. One virus in particular that parents of preemies should know about is respiratory syncytial virus, commonly known as RSV. RSV is contracted by nearly all children by the age of two, often causing relatively minor symptoms that mimic the common cold. However, preemies are most at risk for developing much more serious symptoms, including a serious respiratory infection (severe RSV disease) from the virus, because their lungs are underdeveloped and they don’t have the antibodies needed to fight off infection.

Below are a few quick facts that all parents should know about RSV:

  • RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, and severe RSV disease causes up to 10 times as many infant deaths each year as the flu.
  • RSV is most prevalent during the winter months. The CDC has defined the “RSV season” as beginning in November and lasting through March for most parts of North America.
  • In addition to prematurity, common risk factors include low birth weight, certain lung or heart diseases, a family history of asthma and frequent contact with other children.

*Prevention is Key

RSV is very contagious and can be spread easily through touching, sneezing and coughing. Since there’s no
treatment for RSV, parents should take the following preventive steps to help protect their child:

  • Wash hands, toys, bedding, and play areas frequently
  • Ensure you, your family, and any visitors in your home wash their hands or use hand sanitizer
  • Avoid large crowds and people who are or have been sick
  • Never let anyone smoke near your baby
  • Speak with your child’s doctor if he or she may be at high risk for RSV, as a preventive therapy may be available
  • Know the Symptoms and contact your child’s pediatrician immediately if your child exhibits one or more of the following: severe coughing, wheezing or rapid gasping breaths.

@georgeteh3 put his heart and soul into this proje @georgeteh3 put his heart and soul into this project piece for @arteh_creations ❤️ He’s learning new things throughout the furniture design and building process. And figuring it out along the way (all without formal training, education or experience in the trade - learned it from YouTube lol).

He created functional art from this very, very, very delicate 1950’s gossip chair 🪑 that we got for free through FBMP. It was in pretty bad shape, and I was unsure of how he would do it or what he planned to do. But I’ve always loved how creative his visions and ideas are with pieces he finds, and I knew he’d come up with something amazing!

I’m so proud of how far my husband has come in all facets of his life. And it’s great to see his eyes lighting up again when he talks about building and creating furniture and art!

Happy husband, happy home! 🏡 #vintagedecor #furnitureflipper #gossipchair #beforeandafter #furnituremakeover #antiquefurniture #modernrustic #artdecodesign

After much prayer, reflection, soul-searching, and a sprinkle of courage, I’ve taken a leap and joined the other side as a freelance Creative Consultant for The Allen Lewis Agency (@trytala)🚀

For over 12 years I’ve been captivated by the power of creativity, design, influence, and the art of storytelling. It’s been an incredible journey filled with learning, growth, and an unquenchable passion for all things content creation.💡And now I get to dive into a whole new world (to me, at least) of the agency side working behind the scenes in PR/Marketing/Communications and alongside my Influencer and Content Creator friends! 🌟

This new chapter represents not just a professional milestone, but a personal commitment to pursue what sets my heart on fire. I’m looking forward to working with incredible individuals like Jocelyn Coley and the roster of amazing, major brands. I’m excited to learn from each experience, but also grateful for some familiarity, as I’ve actually worked with a handful of the team throughout the years as an Influencer.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with me! Your support means the world to me, and I can’t wait to see where this new path leads. Also, to all my influencer frands — I hope you’re all excited and ready too, because I’ll be reaching out to you for future potential opportunities! Happy 1-Year Work Anniversary, @Collectors / @PSAc Happy 1-Year Work Anniversary, @Collectors / @PSAcard ! 🎉 Celebrated it on March 8th (but it was International Women’s Day). Also coming up on 10 years in Talent Acquisition/HR field.

Started in this space as a Contract Recruiting Coordinator (temp) scheduling interviews and setting up job fair booths (boy that was an adventure, let me tell ‘ya 🤣). And I very quickly worked my way up to becoming a Corporate Recruiter. I absolutely love what I do, and the impact we make to help better people’s lives through finding their dream careers. ❤️

Now I work for a company who helps people pursue their passions for collecting. My own family loves collecting high-value collectibles too.

I began collecting postage stamps at the age of 8. I remember getting grounded, because I racked up a $500 phone bill making calls to a New York stamp dealer talking all things stamps. And look at me now, Mom! 😂 I was an 80’s and 90’s kid…moved into @lisafrank stickers, @pokemon cards, Cabbage Patch Kids, video games and Beanie Babies. 😜 I’ve been asking my parents where those collectibles are, but they are still missing. 🙈

Now my children, husband and MIL have a wooden chest full of sports cards, Funko Pops, and memorabilia.

As you can see, finding an industry I love, doing the type of work that I do, is a dream and fulfills me. And the company perks are a huge plus. They’re an AMAZING company! 🙌

The collectible hoodie I’m wearing was custom designed by artist, Adam Lister, for Collectors employees! 😍 #findyourpurpose #findyourpath #findyourpassion #HR #recruiter #recruiterlife #corporateidentity #corporatemom #dreamjob #humanresources #talentacquisition #psacard #collectors #dowhatyoulovetodo #workanniversary
Working from home does have it’s perks! Beautiful Working from home does have it’s perks! Beautiful views, peace and quiet, can work in my bathrobe (and take it off to reveal my work appropriate attire during Zoom meetings 🤣). I was super cold here, since Cali’s amazing yet bipolar weather allows for zero usage of heat and air conditioning, but still needing things handy for warmth.
