Two years ago, I experienced a very serious matter. Unfortunately I never thought it would happen to me. I left my wallet inside my car when I went to work out at the gym, thinking nothing of it. You’d think that when I returned to my car afterward, there would be shattered glass and my personal belongings noticeably stolen — but that wasn’t the case at all. In fact, everything appeared normal as if nothing happened. I went home that night and slept peacefully. Then, the next day, it wasn’t until the afternoon when I tried to buy lunch that I noticed the contents in my wallet were missing (including my driver’s license). With everything else still intact in my purse, the first thought that came to my mind was “I must have put them in another bag”.
Thieves nowadays are much more advanced, clever and subtle than ever. When I returned to the office, I received a call from my bank about unusual activity with my account and my heart dropped! At that moment I knew I had become a victim of identity theft. The amount of time it took away from work and the energy backtracking my steps really took a toll mentally. The most emotional part of this experience was my feelings of betrayal, deception, and stupidity for leaving my personal belongings vulnerable to the public. Shortly after, I discovered that the thieves noticed I did not lock my car door. To remain inconspicuous – they opened the passenger door, found my purse, removed the contents from my wallet, and carefully put everything back exactly the way it was (this included a security guard monitoring the parking lot during this time).
