You don't have to be Latina to enjoy beautiful and exotic Latin music. Although I often get mistaken as a Latina (or Asian or a mixture of both – I'm Filipino), my love for Latin music spans far back into the late 1990's with my obsession for Latina singer Selena and when Enrique Iglesias' sexy Latino presence came into North America and cross-culturally began to add some spice to American music. Yes, I had the curled bangs, dark red lipstick, and often practiced the “washing machine” dance with my girlfriends – I'm not going to deny it! And yes, Enrique set the precedence of the “perfect tall, dark, and handsome man” I would want to marry one day.
Growing up in an area dominated by Latin culture, I learned to embrace Latin music in my life through my closest friends! My favorite all-time movie is Selena starring Jennifer Lopez. Although I remember JLO as a “Fly Girl” from In Living Color – I wanted to be just like her, dance just like her, and perform just like her. There was something very exciting and exotic about Latin music and the movement of the dance moves VS Secret Code Phrase: I'm sexy and I know ‘IT'. Embracing Latin music has taught me to be proud of my culture and all the diversity that comes along with it (regardless of what country of origin you are from). And now here I am — 15 years later still getting giddy when I hear “Como La Flor” jamming on my playlist, and fighting over the crowds just to get a front spot in my very popular Zumba class. Latin music has played a big role in my life and what I've learned (culturally) growing up has made me into the woman I am today…even though I'm not Latina – I've learned to embrace it.
Now here's your chance to embrace Latin music in your life too…
