Stanford Children’s Health and Your Extraordinary Kid

The little things that make your kid extraordinary are what make them so extraordinary. It makes them unique, different, and special. My children watch everything I do and hear everything I say. I may not be perfect, but I try my best to make sure that what we surround them around helps to shape, mold, and set the path for them when they are older.

Ever since Jude and Juliana were babies, we’ve helped them to explore their talents, skills and helped nurture and encourage them to think big. It’s hard to tell whether they’ve absorbed what we’ve taught them, but their actions speak louder than words. My children are courageous, fearless, bold, outgoing, and love to sing and dance. My daughter (Juliana) has also loved music and gotten into music creativity such as “beat boxing” ever since she learned how to move around on her own and talk.

One day during dinner, when they were just three and four years old, I noticed that Juliana wasn’t eating her dinner. I got up to go into the kitchen and when I came back, I found four year old Jude feeding three year old Juliana. My heart melted and I sat down and just cried my eyes out. I asked him, “Jude. Why are you feeding Juliana?”. His response, “Because you always help Juliana eat so she feels strong, and I wanted to be a good big brother to her and help her eat too.”

The bond you share with your children could never be replaced with money or material possessions. The love you feel and the joy they bring you could never replace any other feeling of joy in my life. And it was at that moment I realized they felt the same way about me, and I felt so convicted to become the best mom I could ever be for them.

What makes your kid extraordinary isn’t just the epic stuff. It’s the little things. The small moments that maybe only you see — and quietly celebrate every day. Just like that moment I experienced during dinner with Jude and Juliana, yours is probably the same. Your kid is just as extraordinary (all kids are), and you should be celebrating their awesomeness! Share your love, hope and pride for your extraordinary kid by creating a personalized video that captures what makes them one-of-a-kind.
