Jillian Michaels Detox

*UPDATE as of 10/08/2016: After using this recipe for the last 5 years, I can tell you that it doesn’t matter whether you use 60 ounces or 16 ounces. As a busy mom on-the-go, I was finding zero time to create measuring out 60-oz so I now only use 16-oz water bottles, mix, grab, and go! And it still works (and yup, it still tastes awful — the stuff we put ourselves through for a little weight loss but whatevs). I’ve updated the recipe below and also created a printable pdf you can put on your refrigerator.

*UPDATE as of 07/21/2012:  Okay so with all the controversy of the 16 oz versus 60 oz Jillian Michaels Detox water, I decided to be a guinea pig and try BOTH (one in June and then this recent trial in July). I lost MORE weight using 16 ounces! I cannot explain it, but I suspect it is from a higher concentration of the ingredients versus water ratio. The difference is about 1 pound (so a total of 5.5 lbs of water weight loss instead of the usual 4.5 lbs). It all comes back, of course, because it flushes out excess water.

The other added benefit of doing 16 ounces is that it is the same size as a bottled water.I used regular bottled water (not distilled), PURE Cranberry Juice that you can buy at Whole Foods or Target for about $4-$7, 1/2 of freshly squeezed lemon (I no longer use lemon juice that you buy in the grocery stores), and organic Dandelion Root Tea bags. I DO NOT boil the water – I just mix them ALL together shake and go!

The color changes to a darker, purplish color and the taste is VERY STRONG. If you have a weak stomach, this may not be an alternative for you. I typically drink this every morning with my vitamins and I down it all as quickly as I can. If I cannot stomach it all, I try to drink at least half and then down the other half before lunchtime.

The new benefits of 16 ounces is that you don’t have to mix it all into a pitcher, and you don’t have to drink a ton of it. Just know that you can do either the 60 oz or the 16 oz and either will work effectively. Whether you want the taste diluted more is up to you. Either way, you should be drinking 6-8 glasses of water everyday to stay hydrated and include the Jillian Michaels Detox water into your schedule!

Here’s a photo of all the ingredients for the Jillian Michaels Detox water I purchased at Whole Foods and it all cost about $12 here in Henderson, NV:

I did this along with my normal diet and exercise routine. I do not recommend this recipe for those of you who are pregnant or breast feeding, and as always, consult your physician if you have any health issues. One last thing – readers have asked whether you only drink this and fast…and the answer is DEFINITELY NOT. You should and MUST eat – this is not a fasting diet so be sure you are eating too!

*UPDATE as of 04/05/2012:  Ever since I posted this article on Pinterest  about the Jillian Michaels Detox 5-weeks ago, it has received 449 Re-Pins, 132+ Likes, and several comments. One of the comments that raised a huge red flag for me was that the amount of water was supposed to be 16 oz. and NOT 60 oz. I have been digging around online, and there is apparently much debate regarding the recipe. I FINALLY stumbled upon a video that Jillian Michaels herself created, and it says clear as day: 60 OUNCES! So if you are concerned with whether the amount of water you used was over diluting the ingredients, you can rest assure that I have confirmed the amount!
Here is the video I found confirming the Jillian Michaels Detox water recipe:

Jillian Michaels Detox Review

*UPDATE: I did it! I endured seven (7) whole days of the Excess Water Weight Challenge and lost 4.5 lbs! Here’s my experience:

1. The Dandelion Root Tea Bags are difficult to find and you will most likely need to go to your local organic grocery store (for Las Vegas we went to Whole Foods).

2. Sixty (60) ounces of water each day is A LOT of water. I consumed 8-9 ounces of water every 1.5-2 hours, and expect the need to run to the bathroom every hour too!

3. The taste was fine – the mixture of different juices had a nice hint of flavor. I didn’t really notice a specific taste of the Dandelion Root Tea Bag (which was okay with me!). Other readers think the taste is awful, but I honestly had no issues with it.

4. I noticed a significant difference in my skin and energy level by the third day. My skin was glowing, appeared more supple, and my energy was higher than normal. I also noticed  my skin clearing up!

5. All in all – I would definitely do the Jillian Michaels detox again the week before or the week of my cycle. I feel like my body has gone through a bit of a detox and I feel so refreshed! Keep in mind that I balanced what I ate, and worked out 3 times the week of the challenge. Overall health and weight maintenance comes from a mixture and proper balance of exercise and eating healthy. This should in no way be a substitute for dieting and/or food consumption. “Balance those scales!”

If you are anything like me, there is that ONE (1) week each month before “It” happens — *poof* you magically gain an immediate five (5) pounds! I do a double-take on my weight scale and raise my fist in the air in frustration. I work out 3-4 times each week, drink lots of water, and eat as healthy as I possibly can — all that hard work and I gained five (5) pounds?! I was telling my Personal Trainer friend about my situation, and she said one of the major causes is all the water weight and bloat that many women have to deal with right before (and/or during) their cycle.

I was exploring the creative world of Pinterest and stumbled across this life changing Jillian Michaels detox water recipe on how to get rid of 5 lbs. of bloat and I am motivated to try it! It sounds very simple and effective, because it contains Dandelion Root (which is said to be a major factor in flushing out excess water weight). I am going to try this out starting TODAY (02/25/2012) and will update this blog post throughout the seven (7) days to let you read all about my adventures and results!
Here’s the Jillian Michaels Detox Water Recipe: How To Lose 5 lbs. of Bloat:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 16oz (16-ounces) water bottle of distilled or pure water
  • 1-Tablespoon SUGAR-FREE Cranberry Juice
  • 1-Dandelion Root Tea Bag (Get at: Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s/Health Food Store)
  • 2-Tablespoons of fresh squeezed or pure Lemon Juice

DIRECTIONS:

Take a sip of water from water bottle (to prevent ingredients from overflowing).

Combine all ingredients into water bottle and shake.

You must drink each water bottle every day for seven (7) days.

I started this two days ago and have lost two pounds! Plus it TOTALLY alleviated my cramps and I feel no bloat whatsoever.
I brewed four tea bags in 32 ounces of water, then let cool. I fill my 24 ounce cup up with half the tea, one tbs of lemon juice, one tbs of sugar free cranberry and teaspoon of Splenda. I fill the rest of the cup up with water and drink three times daily.

Best i have found so far is Ocean Spray 100% Juice Cranberry & Raspberry. No sugar added. I found it at the grocery store. It actually stares it is a blend of 6 juices, and the ingredient list has no added sugars or sugar substitutes. I have tried it yet but will be starting tomorrow.

I tried the Ocean Spray 100% Cranberry Juice No Sugar Added, and it’s okay. The next round that I do this, I plan to use the organic 100% cranberry I saw at Target – it’s expensive, though ($9). We shall see!

Hi Everyone!!! To answer the majority of questions here – YES! You can absolutely still eat. This is to lose the excess water weight and bloat so it’s not a diet (it’s more like a detox). I ate proportional meals, tracked calories, and worked out three times that week (my normal routine) and with this recipe I lost 4 pounds!

Also – I did not boil the water. I used pure, tepid water and put the tea bag in there.

As far as a step-by-step: I didn’t follow a process. I just threw everything in the big cup, stirred, and drank ALL of the 60 ounces everyday for seven days. It really was super easy to follow. The most difficult part of the whole thing: Finding the Dandelion Root Tea Bag and running to the bathroom every hour! Haha! Hope this helps!

        Hi Jesse,

Correct – I mixed them ALL together to the 60 oz of water. There have, however, been reports that the recipe found on Pinterest is incorrect and is supposed to only be SIXTEEN (16) oz of water. I am conducting my due diligence to further investigate this. Once I know more, I will post it to this blog! Thanks!

I used the one shaped like a lemon? Haha. I don’t know how to best explain it. I am sure you can use lemon juice from an actual lemon as well. I do not think it matters, which is why the recipe was so vague and simple.

ok guys i watched the video and i turned on the captions and she actually says 16oz. Now that “the it mom” did this with the 60oz of water and STILL lost weight then i dont think it matters as long as all the ingredients are in there. It’s hard to say though because it sounds like she says 60 but the captions say sixteen…. so i think i may just try both and see which one works better!

I’ve tried both and they work equally as well! I’m assuming that the Dandelion Root Tea Bag plays the biggest part in this. It tastes worse at 16 oz but you also get it over with quicker (I down it all and get on with my day). Try your best to use all pure and organic ingredients but I live frugally and use what I can at home. I also freshly squeeze the lemon instead of using lemon juice, but not sure whether it matters.

Is there a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe with-in what you would consider a reasonable driving distance? Also, RiteAid and Walgreens are carying a lot of suppliments like that now. You could also order online. All this recipe is is a mixture of different diuretics (stuff that makes you pee and takes bad stuff out with it.) It probably wouldn’t hurt not having it, but it would be much more effective with it.

60 oz of water a day is not that hard. I drink that anyway, but I think the extra diuretics will probably be very helpful in detoxing. They sell water jugs and cups in 30-64 oz specifically so you can get the reccomended amount of water in-take per day. Drink eight 8oz glasses of water?! Sounds scary. Drink one 60 oz or two 30 oz cups? Seems more reasonable. My other tip is to get a cup with a straw. You drink more of it faster and it goes down easier- which is also why you should avoid drinks with straws on your girl’s night out.

What was your diet like? Just healthy eating, in addition to this new regime?

Yes – clean eating with chicken breasts, salmon, lots of greens, and smoothies!

I didn’t realize you could use a tea blend, I couldn’t find dandelion root tea bags so I bought dandelion root vitamin supplements and dissolved it in the water. Do you suppose it would have the same effect?

Do you just place the tea bag in the water? Or do you need to warm it up first and does it need to steep? Do you just leave it in there throughout the day?

I’m in the middle of this detox and I am not sure it’s making a difference. I’ll give it a few more days. It has helped me increase my fluids!

I’m curious as to why she would call this “Detox” water when all it is, is a diuretic. Sounds like she needed a popular buzz word hook to get people to notice. I’ll be curious to find out how fast the water weight comes back or if all. Not a fan of Jillian’s…sorry. I worked along side of her for years in a small personal training gym. She had “questionable” practices way back before she was “Jillian Michaels”.

No supplement is a replacement for diet or exercise! YES, you will see some weight loss right away by using the Lady Soma Detox, but it will be slow and at a lower level, unless you watch what you are eating. The first time I did the Lady Soma Detox I lost 3 lbs RIGHT AWAY, but then my body got used to it. Now it has been easy to maintain this weight . . .
