Take the Jillian Michaels Detox With Me! | Need To Lose 5 lbs of Water Weight?

Jillian Michaels Detox

Jillian Michaels Detox*UPDATE as of 07/21/2012:  Okay so with all the controversy of the 16 oz versus 60 oz Jillian Michaels Detox water, I decided to be a guinea pig and try BOTH (one in June and then this recent trial in July). I lost MORE weight using 16 ounces! I cannot explain it, but I suspect it is from a higher concentration of the ingredients versus water ratio. The difference is about 1 pound (so a total of 5.5 lbs of water weight loss instead of the usual 4.5 lbs). It all comes back, of course, because it flushes out excess water.

The other added benefit of doing 16 ounces is that it is the same size as a bottled water.I used regular bottled water (not distilled), PURE Cranberry Juice that you can buy at Whole Foods or Target for about $4-$7, 1/2 of freshly squeezed lemon (I no longer use lemon juice that you buy in the grocery stores), and organic Dandelion Root Tea bags. I DO NOT boil the water – I just mix them ALL together shake and go!

The color changes to a darker, purplish color and the taste is VERY STRONG. If you have a weak stomach, this may not be an alternative for you. I typically drink this every morning with my vitamins and I down it all as quickly as I can. If I cannot stomach it all, I try to drink at least half and then down the other half before lunchtime.

The new benefits of 16 ounces is that you don’t have to mix it all into a pitcher, and you don’t have to drink a ton of it. Just know that you can do either the 60 oz or the 16 oz and either will work effectively. Whether you want the taste diluted more is up to you. Either way, you should be drinking 6-8 glasses of water everyday to stay hydrated and include the Jillian Michaels Detox water into your schedule!

Here’s a photo of all the ingredients for the Jillian Michaels Detox water I purchased at Whole Foods and it all cost about $12 here in Henderson, NV:

I did this along with my normal diet and exercise routine. I do not recommend this recipe for those of you who are pregnant or breast feeding, and as always, consult your physician if you have any health issues. One last thing – readers have asked whether you only drink this and fast…and the answer is DEFINITELY NOT. You should and MUST eat – this is not a fasting diet so be sure you are eating too!

*UPDATE as of 04/05/2012:  Ever since I posted this article on Pinterest  about the Jillian Michaels Detox 5-weeks ago, it has received 449 Re-Pins, 132+ Likes, and several comments. One of the comments that raised a huge red flag for me was that the amount of water was supposed to be 16 oz. and NOT 60 oz. I have been digging around online, and there is apparently much debate regarding the recipe. I FINALLY stumbled upon a video that Jillian Michaels herself created, and it says clear as day: 60 OUNCES! So if you are concerned with whether the amount of water you used was over diluting the ingredients, you can rest assure that I have confirmed the amount!
Here is the video I found confirming the Jillian Michaels Detox water recipe:

Jillian Michaels Detox Review

*UPDATE: I did it! I endured seven (7) whole days of the Excess Water Weight Challenge and lost 4.5 lbs! Here’s my experience:

1. The Dandelion Root Tea Bags are difficult to find and you will most likely need to go to your local organic grocery store (for Las Vegas we went to Whole Foods).

2. Sixty (60) ounces of water each day is A LOT of water. I consumed 8-9 ounces of water every 1.5-2 hours, and expect the need to run to the bathroom every hour too!

3. The taste was fine – the mixture of different juices had a nice hint of flavor. I didn’t really notice a specific taste of the Dandelion Root Tea Bag (which was okay with me!). Other readers think the taste is awful, but I honestly had no issues with it.

4. I noticed a significant difference in my skin and energy level by the third day. My skin was glowing, appeared more supple, and my energy was higher than normal. I also noticed  my skin clearing up!

5. All in all – I would definitely do the Jillian Michaels detox again the week before or the week of my cycle. I feel like my body has gone through a bit of a detox and I feel so refreshed! Keep in mind that I balanced what I ate, and worked out 3 times the week of the challenge. Overall health and weight maintenance comes from a mixture and proper balance of exercise and eating healthy. This should in no way be a substitute for dieting and/or food consumption. “Balance those scales!”

If you are anything like me, there is that ONE (1) week each month before “It” happens — *poof* you magically gain an immediate five (5) pounds! I do a double-take on my weight scale and raise my fist in the air in frustration. I work out 3-4 times each week, drink lots of water, and eat as healthy as I possibly can — all that hard work and I gained five (5) pounds?! I was telling my Personal Trainer friend about my situation, and she said one of the major causes is all the water weight and bloat that many women have to deal with right before (and/or during) their cycle.

I was exploring the creative world of Pinterest and stumbled across this life changing Jillian Michaels detox water recipe on how to get rid of 5 lbs. of bloat and I am motivated to try it! It sounds very simple and effective, because it contains Dandelion Root (which is said to be a major factor in flushing out excess water weight). I am going to try this out starting TODAY (02/25/2012) and will update this blog post throughout the seven (7) days to let you read all about my adventures and results!
Here’s the Jillian Michaels Detox Water Recipe: How To Lose 5 lbs. of Bloat:
* Get sixty (60)-ounces of distilled or pure water
* Add one (1) Tablespoon (Tbsp) of SUGAR-FREE Cranberry Juice
* Add one (1) Dandelion Root Tea Bag (You can find these at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s or any of the the health food stores, if neither of these are nearby)
* Add two (2) Tablespoons (Tbsp) of Lemon Juice
Directions: You must drink the sixty (60)-ounces each and every day for seven (7) days.
*** The Jillian Michaels detox water recipe works, because it helps flush out excess water weight you have been carrying around in your body and you could lose more than five (5) pounds in seven (7) days (depending on how much excess water weight you are carrying around).

I started this two days ago and have lost two pounds! Plus it TOTALLY alleviated my cramps and I feel no bloat whatsoever.
I brewed four tea bags in 32 ounces of water, then let cool. I fill my 24 ounce cup up with half the tea, one tbs of lemon juice, one tbs of sugar free cranberry and teaspoon of Splenda. I fill the rest of the cup up with water and drink three times daily.

    • Deanna says:

Can anyone tell me where to find sugar free cranberry juice? All i could find was low cal cranberry juice. Help please??

      • Carrie says:

Best i have found so far is Ocean Spray 100% Juice Cranberry & Raspberry. No sugar added. I found it at the grocery store. It actually stares it is a blend of 6 juices, and the ingredient list has no added sugars or sugar substitutes. I have tried it yet but will be starting tomorrow.

      • TheItMom.com says:

I tried the Ocean Spray 100% Cranberry Juice No Sugar Added, and it’s okay. The next round that I do this, I plan to use the organic 100% cranberry I saw at Target – it’s expensive, though ($9). We shall see!

        • Denise says:

I live in NY & found pure Cranberry Juice at Trader Joe’s. It only contains cranberries, NOTHING ELSE!

      • Carol says:

I found organic pure cranberry juice at Whole foods for $7.00, no sugar added. It does taste good.

      • Pollywog says:

There is no such thing as sugar cranberry juice. Cranberries have sugar in them naturally. All fruit has sugar.

io sono dimagrita con la dieta dukan, favolosa

  • Junebug says:

Interesting. I might have to try it. I do know I need to drink a ton more water.

  • Brenda says:

how do you actually make this recipe? I have everything, need step by step on how to make the detox.

  • Marcellla says:

Hi! I want to try this! But my big question is if you can eat food too or if is one of those detox recipes where is no food and just drink this detox beverage? Thanks!

  • jammy says:

Same Question as Marcella… Do we only drink water the whole week???

  • mariana says:

stupid question perhaps, buuuut…do you still eat during this detox? Or is it like the Lemonade – Maple Syrup diet that you only drink this for 10 days?

  • Lara says:

Do you have to boil the water before you add the tea bag?

  • TheItMom.com says:

Hi Everyone!!! To answer the majority of questions here – YES! You can absolutely still eat. This is to lose the excess water weight and bloat so it’s not a diet (it’s more like a detox). I ate proportional meals, tracked calories, and worked out three times that week (my normal routine) and with this recipe I lost 4 pounds!

Also – I did not boil the water. I used pure, tepid water and put the tea bag in there.

As far as a step-by-step: I didn’t follow a process. I just threw everything in the big cup, stirred, and drank ALL of the 60 ounces everyday for seven days. It really was super easy to follow. The most difficult part of the whole thing: Finding the Dandelion Root Tea Bag and running to the bathroom every hour! Haha! Hope this helps!

    • Jesse says:

Do you add the 1T juice, 2T lemon juice and 1 tea bag for the whole 60 oz or just per cup you make?

      • TheItMom.com says:

        Hi Jesse,

Correct – I mixed them ALL together to the 60 oz of water. There have, however, been reports that the recipe found on Pinterest is incorrect and is supposed to only be SIXTEEN (16) oz of water. I am conducting my due diligence to further investigate this. Once I know more, I will post it to this blog! Thanks!

    • Maci says:

How long do you let the dandelion root tea bag sit? I am doing this for a project. Please reply ASAP. Thanks

  • Sarah W. says:

I actually found my dandelion root tea at Target!

  • monika says:

I just started this detox yesterday, and I found my dandelion root tea at gnc, it was only like $5.59. It’s really not hard at all to drink it all, but like she said, you spend a lot of time in the bathroom! haha

good luck to everyone else that’s trying it!

  • SavySmarts says:

I’m a teen, and I just started this thing with my mom today! The taste is okay but i had to put in an extra spoon of cranberry juice, because it lacked a little flavor. Other than that its pretty decent! The thing I want most out of this is healthier skin and more energy! Wish us luck!

  • Jillian Nemeth says:

Does this count as water intake? Do I drink water in addition to this drink?

    • TheItMom.com says:

Hi Jillian – I drank water in addition to this drink. Water is good for you overall, and I drank an additional 32 oz or so of regular water and still lost the excess weight.

  • R says:

What kind of lemon juice to use? Like can you put a pealed lemon in a blender and use straight up lemon juice? Or buy the kind of lemon juice thats in container that looks in a shape of a lemon? does it matter?

    • TheItMom.com says:

      Hi Rachel,

I used the one shaped like a lemon? Haha. I don’t know how to best explain it. I am sure you can use lemon juice from an actual lemon as well. I do not think it matters, which is why the recipe was so vague and simple.

  • Wynne (stealmagnolia deals) says:

sounded like she said 16 ounces to me : )

  • Errign says:

By sugar-free cranberry juice. do you mean no sugar added 100% cran juice? (As opposed to a sugar free cran cocktail..)

  • stephanie says:

Will this detox work if I used it the week after “it” happened? or does it only flush the excess water the week or during ?

  • amanda says:

ok guys i watched the video and i turned on the captions and she actually says 16oz. Now that “the it mom” did this with the 60oz of water and STILL lost weight then i dont think it matters as long as all the ingredients are in there. It’s hard to say though because it sounds like she says 60 but the captions say sixteen…. so i think i may just try both and see which one works better!

    • Kathy says:

I don’t trust the captions, since they kept using “cathy” instead of “caffeine!” I’m pretty sure that she said sixty ounces as well.

      • TheItMom.com says:

I’ve tried both and they work equally as well! I’m assuming that the Dandelion Root Tea Bag plays the biggest part in this. It tastes worse at 16 oz but you also get it over with quicker (I down it all and get on with my day). Try your best to use all pure and organic ingredients but I live frugally and use what I can at home. I also freshly squeeze the lemon instead of using lemon juice, but not sure whether it matters.

    • Debbie says:

I bet by downing 60 oz, it sure helped in getting her daily water intake done a lot quicker!! Sounds like a great idea and I’m going to try this out because I feel very bloated in the morning’s on hot days. Also starting Body By Vi so before I start the program I want to cleanse my system first.

  • Is it a fast? Meaning – are you ONLY suppose to consume this, or is this in addition to your regular diet?

  • i’m just laughing at the fact that anyone would think 16oz of water a day would do much of anything 🙂

  • KalynM says:

Did you boil the water with the root tea bags, and then add the other ingredients? Or did you just add the tea bag to the water and other ingredients?

  • Ashley says:

Can I do this if I’m nursing?

  • Farzeen says:

Does it matter if I use regular water instead of distilled water? Thanks! I really wanna try this!!

  • dee says:

do you eat food as well?

  • Lindsay says:

I just started this diet today and the taste actually makes me sick. I was just wondering if you think I could add crystal light to it to help me get it down easier?

  • Dayna says:

When do you weigh yourself? 60 ounces of water can be quite heavy on the scale!

  • PamelaJ says:

Shopping in the Health Food section at the grocery store, I am assuming the recipe requires pure/real cranberry juice (as opposed to the cranberry flavored juices that contain apple juice, splenda,etc.).

Still questioning if I should steep the tea bag in boiling water and if so, for how long…

    • Cyndi says:

      Today was my first day.

No, I did not boil my water first. I added the ingredients to my 6-oz of water and left the tea bag in there for about 45 minutes and then squeezed it out and threw it away. As far as the Cranberry juice…get 100% juice no sugar added. Do not use the cocktail.

      Good luck!!!

  • TBarr says:

This is my 3rd day on the detox. When I use the restroom my urine is a light green. Is this normal? Has anyone else seen these results?

  • Sierra says:

I live in a rural area in WV so it’s nearly impossible to find dandellion root tea bags… how much of a difference do you think it would make if you used a detox tea where the main ingredient is dandelion root?

    • Heather says:

Is there a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe with-in what you would consider a reasonable driving distance? Also, RiteAid and Walgreens are carying a lot of suppliments like that now. You could also order online. All this recipe is is a mixture of different diuretics (stuff that makes you pee and takes bad stuff out with it.) It probably wouldn’t hurt not having it, but it would be much more effective with it.

  • Heather says:

60 oz of water a day is not that hard. I drink that anyway, but I think the extra diuretics will probably be very helpful in detoxing. They sell water jugs and cups in 30-64 oz specifically so you can get the reccomended amount of water in-take per day. Drink eight 8oz glasses of water?! Sounds scary. Drink one 60 oz or two 30 oz cups? Seems more reasonable. My other tip is to get a cup with a straw. You drink more of it faster and it goes down easier- which is also why you should avoid drinks with straws on your girl’s night out.

  • Bethany says:

Then what? What happens after the 7 days? Is this once a month kind of thing or an every other week thing or….

  • Lauren says:

Did you use the Dandelion root by traditional medicinals?? Itt says roasted Dandelion Roote (Organic)…And you drink 60oz everyday for seven days which means by the 7th day you have drank 7tea bags worth right??

  • Maria says:

A few questions…I take a One a Day women vitamin as well as Biotin everyday, would it be okay to continue taking them while I do this detox? I am also taking Roxy Lean, which is a fat burner should I stop taking it for the week? or is it ok? Some insight would be lovely! Thank you

  • Michelle says:

Do you have to use tea or can something be substituted for it. I’m not a tea person at all.

  • Lara says:

so when you do the tea bag do you cut it open and dump the contents into the mixture? or do you just set it in (still in the tea bag) the mixture? thanks for all the helpful info!

  • Christina says:

How often can you do this detox?

  • Tiffany says:

Do you have to only do it for 7 days or can you continue as long as you want after that?

The image at the top of this article (the pin itself) came from a pro-ana (as in “pro-anorexia”) tumblr. The tumblr page itself has been taken down, but I don’t think it is wise to promote those sort of pages. Thanks for the video, I’ve been wondering if this pin had actually originated from something she said.

What was your diet like? Just healthy eating, in addition to this new regime?

  • PCM says:

I didn’t realize you could use a tea blend, I couldn’t find dandelion root tea bags so I bought dandelion root vitamin supplements and dissolved it in the water. Do you suppose it would have the same effect?

  • Claire Adams says:

Do you just place the tea bag in the water? Or do you need to warm it up first and does it need to steep? Do you just leave it in there throughout the day?

  • I’m in the middle of this detox and I am not sure it’s making a difference. I’ll give it a few more days. It has helped me increase my fluids!

  • I’m curious as to why she would call this “Detox” water when all it is, is a diuretic. Sounds like she needed a popular buzz word hook to get people to notice. I’ll be curious to find out how fast the water weight comes back or if all. Not a fan of Jillian’s…sorry. I worked along side of her for years in a small personal training gym. She had “questionable” practices way back before she was “Jillian Michaels”.

  • Interesting! I’ve not heard of this before, and I do NOT have a strong stomach LOL I may give it a tiny try 🙂 Thanks so much for taking the time to link up with us over at the #HomeMattersParty – we hope to see you again next week!

No supplement is a replacement for diet or exercise! YES, you will see some weight loss right away by using the Lady Soma Detox, but it will be slow and at a lower level, unless you watch what you are eating. The first time I did the Lady Soma Detox I lost 3 lbs RIGHT AWAY, but then my body got used to it. Now it has been easy to maintain this weight . . .

  • Ali says:

Is this fluid ounces or ounces? Because where I live we use millilitres…

  • Ali says:

Is it okay if the tea has chicory root in it too, will this make any difference?
